Illuminated designer light switch with dark chrome toggles in a bespoke Farrow Ball colour, from the YORK collection by ROHDE+ROHDE. Designed as an architectural detail rather than a purely functional fitting, YORK combines a frameless glass-effect front plate with solid metal toggles in a sophisticated dark chrome finish.
Each front plate is individually finished in the ROHDE+ROHDE studio, where the chosen Farrow Ball colour is applied by hand to the reverse of the crystal-clear surface. This allows the switch to be precisely coordinated with the surrounding interior – whether to blend quietly into the wall colour or to create a deliberate and beautifully considered contrast.
The pairing of a bespoke colour finish with dark chrome metalwork gives this version of YORK a particularly refined character. The deeper metallic tone feels softer and more understated than bright chrome, while still providing a crisp architectural accent. Depending on the selected colour, the result can be subtle and tonal, striking and graphic, or distinctly contemporary.
YORK is designed and manufactured by ROHDE+ROHDE. The switches are not products of Farrow Ball. Farrow Ball colours are used exclusively for the bespoke finish of the ROHDE+ROHDE front plates.
Bespoke colour as part of the interior architecture
With YORK, the light switch becomes part of the overall design language of the room. The front plate can be created to complement wall colours, fitted furniture, joinery, cabinetry and other carefully selected interior finishes.
The chosen Farrow Ball colour is applied by hand to the reverse of the transparent front plate. Because the colour sits behind the crystal-clear surface rather than on top of it, it remains visually protected while gaining an exceptional sense of depth and luminosity.
This method is particularly effective in sophisticated interiors, where small details contribute to the overall atmosphere. Pale and chalky shades create a beautiful contrast with the dark chrome toggles, while deeper colours can produce a quieter, more seamless and highly elegant result.
Alongside Farrow Ball colours, YORK is available in a broad range of bespoke finishes, including colours from Little Greene and Designers Guild, as well as RAL and NCS shades.
Dark chrome toggles with optional illumination
The solid metal toggles can optionally be fitted with a subtle illuminated point. Depending on the installation, this can serve as an orientation light, an indicator or simply as a discreet design feature.
At night, the combination of colour, polished dark metal and a small point of light gives the switch a particularly distinctive presence. The effect remains restrained rather than decorative, preserving the clean and architectural character of the design.
Where illumination is not required, the supplied LED insert can simply be omitted during installation.
Exceptional colour depth through reverse painting
Every coloured YORK front plate is individually hand-finished on the reverse. The colour layer is therefore positioned behind the transparent surface, creating a rich and sophisticated visual depth.
ROHDE+ROHDE uses high-quality crystal-clear acrylic glass with effective scratch protection. The material is eleven times more impact-resistant than conventional glass and incorporates a UV filter that helps protect the colour finish from long-term changes caused by exposure to light.

Installation of YORK toggle switches
YORK front plates can be used for one or several wall boxes and may be installed either horizontally or vertically. Where multiple wall boxes are used, a standard spacing of 71 mm centre to centre is required.
The wall boxes must be at least 45 mm deep. The switch mechanisms are screwed directly into the wall boxes to provide a secure installation.

A flexible approach to future colour changes
If the interior is redesigned at a later date, the YORK front plate can be replaced without changing the installed switch technology.
For example, if the wall is repainted in a different Farrow Ball shade, a new colour-matched reverse-painted front plate can be ordered separately. The switch mechanism remains in place and only the visible front plate is exchanged.
No electrician is required for the replacement of the front plate alone.
